It was late in the afternoon looking into a hot sun and the knowledge that I would be sleeping outside once again without a lot of food. The nest town was still not in my sights. Automatically when I hear an approaching vehicle I stuck out went my thumb fully expecting a drive bye as had been the case over the past two days. This was different an old pick up slowed the stopped.
A large man looking much like the friendly farmer motioned me towards the truck. Where are you off to next town is a good two days in that direction and a day and a half in the t’other? I explained my situation to him. I had set off on a crossroad trip but soon ran out of funds. The last town the sheriff made a point of telling me I should not be there or I would be arrested for vagrancy. He sat staring at me then he took a deep breath and said well I cannot drive you to the next town but it is getting late so I will let you sleep in the barn As for money well I got a lot work on the farm to do can’t pay you much sort slave wages but the work is hard probably you would not want it, needs a slave to do it. I said what ever it pays will be fine I need the money and food. With a big smile on his face he said guess I have myself a slave Martha will be happy we have been looking for one for months. One things is for sure you will be fed well perhaps so well you might stay more then a week. In my mind I was thinking a day or two but would not say that to him he was being extremely nice to me and anything would be better then sleeping by the road. I watch for landmarks as we drove as my plan was to fatten up a bit rest then leave in the middle of the night. Then he turned on a dirt road and drove for nearly two hours with turn offs right then left I could not keep track I was lost totally. We pulled into a gate with a fence running as far as I could see. He pressed a remote the gate opened and closed as we pass through another half hour and we were there and I was a little fearful of my choice!
